Minutes of PPG meeting held on 30th January 2013
A meeting of the Patient Participation Group was held on 30th January 2013 at the Shirley Medical Centre. The meeting started at 10.10am.
Practice staff present were Dr. Abbot ,Luis Fernandes (Practice Manager) and Mary Polya (Administrator).
Twelve patients had been invited to attend, those who attended being Mr A Smith and Ms C Schembri.
Luis opened the meeting by explaining his role as practice manager. It was noted that we must have more patient participation in order to improve our practice.
Waiting area –the flooring is yet to be finished and this is an on-going matter, the removal of the carpet has been regretted by some people but due to hygiene reasons it has had to be replaced with more easily cleanable flooring.
The chairs are also due to be replaced, also for hygiene reasons.
Children's area – it was mentioned that other surgeries have a children's area but due to the size of the waiting area and the need for hygiene, this was not thought to be feasible.
Bins – it was noted that there is no bin in the waiting area and this can be rectified. A
Access – the access doors are to be changed, ? to automatic doors which will enable easier disabled access. The current doors / porch being difficult for those in wheelchairs and those with buggies. W
aiting times – waiting times are sometimes long but this is understood by the patients, emergency appointments are generally available for real emergencies.
New Software System – the surgery is due to have a new software system installed on 7th February and this will inevitably lead to some difficulties in the first week.
Web site – this is now up and running for notices, prescription requests and booking of appointments will be added later
Suggestion box – it was suggested that we have a suggestion box in the waiting area and this will be looked into.
Leaflets – it was suggested that we have more relevant information leaflets in the waiting area.
Prescription box – a new prescription request box to be put on the post box on the external door and that this should be opened routinely at regular intervals. It was explained that repeat prescription requests need to be in writing either from the patient or regular pharmacist, only the housebound and elderly being able to order by telephone.
Pratice leaflet - a practice leaflet / brochure should be printed and also kept upated with general practice information.
Additional services – eg physiotherapy, these may be added to the surgery at a later date, as we have the available space.
Ms Schembri praised the surgery and thanked them for their help over the past ten years and her praise was seconded by Mr Smith.
It is hoped that the next meeting will be a broader meeting with more patient participation and that this meeting will be chaired by a patient. Mr Smith agreed to do this.
Luis thanked Ms Schembri and Mr Smith for attending this meeting, the next meeting should be held in May.
